Birmingham date ideas

I may be biased, as I’m very proud to call Birmingham my home, but I will tell anybody who listens that Birmingham is one of the best cities in Europe. It may not be famed for stories of a dark medieval history like York or Stratford, and it may not boast as much grand Victorian architecture as Edinburgh or Bristol, but what the city may lack in prestige it more than makes up for in personality, culture, and diversity.

The city is well known for it’s industrial history, with most of Birmingham being built during the industrial revolution period, to house the workers of the numerous factories that earned the city the nickname of “workshop of the world”. The factories turned out a lot of metalwork, including needles, pens, guns, and jewellery – but also other goodies such as chocolate courtesy of the Cadbury factory in Bournville, which still operates to this day.

In today’s service economy, Birmingham’s main industries include automotive engineering, science and research, business and finance, and creative media – and jewellery making still plays a significant role in the local economy, with 40% of UK-made jewellery still produced in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.

Birmingham is also very well known for being one of the best nightlife cities in the UK, with plenty of entertainment on offer after dark – so if cocktails and and olives take your interest more than afternoon tea with scones, you will feel right at home here.

Here is a list of some of date night venues in Birmingham where we could enjoy an evening together…

TATTU

A modern, upscale Chinese restaurant just behind Colmore row, that also does great cocktails. Perfect if you are staying near Snow Hill, Colmore Row, or Church Street.

24 STORIES

Previously named Orelle, and now renamed 24 stories, as it is 24 floors up at the top of 103 Colmore Row. This is a beautiful restaurant with great food and ambience, and probably the best view in town. Great if you are staying around New Street/ Colmore Row and want to make the evening feel extra special.

ADAM’S

There are three Michelin * restaurants in Birmingham of which Adam’s is one. Specialising in seasonal produce and natural flavours, it is advisable to book in advance. Located just off Victoria Square, Adam’s is perfect for those staying around New Street or Colmore Row.

SIMPSON’S

The second of Birmingham’s Michelin * restaurants, located in Edgbaston. Simpson’s is known for contemporary classics and an excellent tasting menu. Booking in advance is advised – open Wednesday to Saturday.

OPHEEM

The last but not least of Birmingham’s Michelin * restaurants, located in the city centre. Opheem specialises in comtemporary fine dining Indian cuisine and is owned by a native Brummie who grew up in Aston. Open Wednesday to Saturday.

ASHA’S

Since Birmingham is known far and wide for being blessed with an abundance of incredible South Asian restaurants, I had to include (at least) two in this list. Asha’s offers the perfect mix of being classy and fabulous but also a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Located on Newhall Street, just off Colmore Row, and open 7 nights a week.
